Continue Plants Fish in Eastern Sierra Waters

After a huge loss in fish at three hatchery facilities in the eastern Sierra and Southern California come early july, the California Office of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has executed a current stocking plan to continue placing trout into waters which can be well-liked by anglers.

Waterways in CDFW's South Coast Region and Inland Deserts Region are typically stacked with trout from Mojave Water Hatchery, Dark Rock Hatchery and Fish Springs Hatchery, but this season, fish at all three services were contaminated with a bacterial outbreak. On September 20, CDFW reported that considerable effort to take care of the fish had been unsuccessful, and pathologists encouraged euthanizing 3.2 million fish and decontaminating the services in order to end the spread of Lactococcus garvieae, which resembles streptococcus.

"Euthanization wasn't the outcome we wished for, but after exhausting all therapies, it had been obvious that removing the raceways, sterilizing the services and starting over was the sole solution," said Jay Rowan, CDFW's Statewide Hatchery Program Manager.

Anglers were understandably concerned with decreased fishing opportunity for the rest of 2020 and in to 2021, and CDFW Hatchery Plan staff immediately started to construct a "Strategy B" to make sure that planting can continue in a few capacity.

CDFW's multiphase stocking strategy calls for the reallocation of fish from lower priority seas in the rest of their state to the highest use seas in places usually planted by the depopulated hatcheries this time of year. During "period one" (which started the past week of September and may tell you mid-October), 16 water figures in the Inland Leave and South Coast parts is likely to be filled with fish from the Moccasin Creek and San Joaquin hatcheries. During "phase two" (which operates from the next half of July through early spring), additional seas in Southern Florida will soon be stocked by Fillmore Hatchery. Stage two is dependent on water temperatures cooling enough to plant. All through "phase 3" (spring and summer 2021), CDFW may handle selling for the trout openers and summertime fishing opportunities.
